La Nouba originates from the French phrase “faire la nouba,” which means to party, to live it up. This creation is an unforgettable journey through our universe—at once threatening and exhilarating, frightening and familiar. La Nouba is the story of all stories, the site of all mysteries, where dreams and nightmares sleep side by side. La Nouba is memory, individual and universal. It beckons to us, challenges us to uncover passions we thought we'd lost long ago.
The show begins with a colourful array of circus characters as they parade rather traditionally into the theatre, toward the stage. Suddenly, the lights dim and a rooster crows to stir our imaginations, our sense of adventure and the child within. As the lights come up, our minds too are turned on by a set that appears to be strange yet familiar urban landscape.
La Nouba is a fairytale with many tales within. It is a love story between two dancers, the humorous antics of four nuts, the sad tale of a solitary stroller and the legend of flamboyant circus artists who cast their spell on an urban landscape and the urbanites who watch them. Most of all, it is Virginia’s story. She is the catalyst who opens the doorway and discovers her own fairytale and a whole new realm of possibility in La Nouba; a time and place where beings and objects are animated with a friendly, yet frenzied energy.
This clash of contrasting worlds, this juxtaposition, is the fuel of La Nouba. The two together create a powerful fusion that shocks us with its energy. This is the surreal and exciting territory where the ultimate fairytale of La Nouba unfolds.
